About Taxwire
Taxwire is building the last global sales tax platform. We help companies understand tax exposure, automate compliance, and shield their business from risk across every jurisdiction, industry, and edge case from SMBs to enterprise.
Our Mission: To make global transaction tax compliance a commodity for businesses and governments around the world. Sales tax, VAT, tariffs, duties, gross receipts, transfer tax, etc. have become exponentially more complex as digital commerce and regulatory demands grow. Most companies rely on a mix of legacy software, manual processes, and human services to fully manage their global tax burdens. We believe that solving for enterprise-grade tax compliance requires re-building core infrastructure from the ground up: from source tax law to automated calculation, filings, and remittance. The future looks cheaper, easier, and risk-free for tax payers around the world.
Our approach: Taxwire re-built the enterprise-grade tax engine from zero. Our platform can monitor, calculate, file, remit, and explain taxes across the full spectrum of complexity faced by mid-market and enterprise customers. We cover multiple industries, support both US and international taxes, calculate at a rooftop level, automate traditional services, and more.
Why it matters: Customers choose tax platforms based on coverage, trust, ease, and price. Most solutions force trade-offs. Taxwire delivers broad coverage across: industries, jurisdictions, and tax types; rooftop-level accuracy and traceability for audit-proof compliance, fast implementations without bloated service layers, and fair pricing relative to value. We keep our customers compliant and protect them from risk.
Our customers: We serve finance teams at companies like Pulley, Italic, TopoftheMornin Coffee, Pirate Wires and partner with accounting firms like Graphite Financial, Rivet Tax, Integrated CPA, and many more. To date, we’ve had 0 churn and our customers love us.
Our investors: We’ve raised ~$13M from XYZ Ventures, Headline, Vinyl, Recall Capital, J Ventures, Nomo Ventures, Expansion Capital, Siqi Chen (Runway.com CEO), Michael Bock (Column Tax CTO), Joel Newbert (VP of Finance @ Decagon), Justin Mares (Founder @ Kettle & Fire, Perfect Keto, Truemed), Mike Rosengarten (OpenGov co-founder), Erik Torenberg (Village Global, On Deck, a16z), and many others.
The role
We’re looking for a skilled, experienced, and motivated Founding Backend Engineer to join our team. This role is focused on backend infrastructure, systems architecture, and core product logic. Full stack experience is a plus, but not required.
You’ll work closely with our founders, engineers, and tax SMEs to architect and build the foundational systems that power Taxwire — from our data model and automation pipelines to real-time tax calculation and compliance logic. You’ll play a key role in defining the internal platform that enables our team to ship faster, automate more, and scale globally.
This is a great role for someone who thrives on complexity and wants to help build something important from the ground up. If you’ve ever nerded out over how Stripe, Rippling, or Modern Treasury abstract complicated domains, this is that kind of role.
Key responsibilities
Design and implement core backend services — including data modeling, compliance logic, and internal platforms that support tax automation at scale.
Build scalable systems to monitor, calculate, and apply transaction taxes across a wide range of jurisdictions and industries.
Develop and maintain our domain model for tax rules, jurisdictions, thresholds, and impositions.
Build automation pipelines for filings, payments, and customer workflows.
Use browser automation, scripting, and task queues to reduce manual work across compliance processes.
Leverage LLMs and programmatic tools to enhance tax research, rule extraction, and error handling.
Collaborate across engineering, tax, and product teams to turn complex policy into scalable software systems.
Things we’re looking for
5–10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong focus on backend development.
Strong experience designing systems, services, and data models in complex domains.
Proficiency in our backend stack: Python (FastAPI, Pydantic, pandas, duckdb), Postgres, SQL. Infra runs on AWS.
Bonus: experience working on automation-heavy systems, developer tools, or regulated workflows.
Bonus: experience with LLMs, scripting, or browser automation tools like Playwright.
High attention to detail. Our credibility with customers depends on accuracy and correctness.
Strong communication skills. We’re a writing-first company, and clarity is key in cross-functional work.
A self-starter who can lead projects, make architectural calls, and execute independently.
You’re known for shipping a lot of high-quality code, fast — and taking ownership end-to-end.
Why work with us
We’re solving a complex problem that affects companies globally, with a clear path to becoming a large, enduring business. We literally can’t build fast enough to onboard the volume or magnitude of customer inbound we have.
You’ll be earning early-stage equity in a business that’s been significantly de-risked. We’re in execution mode, not will people give a fuck mode. Our market is large with material tailwinds. And we’ve proven we can build great software, sell customers, win against competitors, and recruit talented, senior people from our industry.
We’re an anti-hype-cycle company. Customers will have to solve these problems regardless of what changes with technology or investor sentiment.
Our team is leveraging years of experience building several of the most successful products in our space from 0 to 1 and beyond.
We’re creating trustworthy products that leverage modern technology, in that order. No half-measures. No shortcuts where it matters. We do right by our customers or go home.
If Taxwire succeeds, our goal is to help our team achieve life-changing financial and career outcomes. We’ll work closely with you to make sure you understand and can reap the benefits of your equity (including things like taxes).
We care deeply about serving our people, whether those people are our customers or our team.
We’re well funded by respected institutional VCs and angels.
You’ll work with some of the most talented engineers and tax experts in this domain.
Competitive salary and company-covered benefits package.
Why you shouldn’t work with us
You love lots of structure and want to be closely managed.
You are not ready to put in the hard work of taking something from 0-1 and then 1 to 10.
You’re not excited by complex domains or mission-critical systems.
Don’t get excited about serving our customers or find this problem space boring.
You hate the idea of talking to a customer.
You lack taste.
Shipping lots of high-quality code, fast… scares you.
