The Role
We’re hiring a Sales Tax Compliance Specialist to work directly with our Tax Lead and Operations lead to execute high-volume compliance work for customers, including filings and registrations.
This is a hands-on execution role. You will file a lot of returns. You will complete a lot of registrations.
Long-term, you’l help us automate the work with in-house AI tooling + collaborating with our engineering team. But, make no mistake, this job will involve a lot of dirty work.
Deadlines can be intense. The job requires focus, patience, and accuracy across hundreds of tasks. If you like operational work and take pride in getting things right at scale, you’ll do well here.
If you mainly want research, advisory, or strategic tax work - this is not the role.
We’re open to multiple experience levels. The right candidate may enter as a specialist or senior specialist, with a path toward Compliance Team Manager as we scale.
What You’ll Do
Filings execution
Prepare and file large volumes of state and local sales tax returns
Manage filing calendars and ensure deadlines are never missed
Work with Departments of Revenue to resolve notices, rejections, portal issues, and questions
Maintain accurate records and audit trails
Registrations & account maintenance
Complete state sales tax registrations
Coordinate with customers to collect required information and documents
Track registration status and follow up with jurisdictions
Maintain portal access and account details across states
Customer interaction
Follow up with customers to collect missing info
Clearly communicate status, outcomes, and next steps
Operational improvement
Spot recurring issues and inefficiencies
Suggest workflow and tooling improvements
Provide feedback to product & engineering on automation
What We’re Looking For
Required
A minimum of 3+ years working directly with multi-state sales tax filings.
Experience working inside tax portals
Extremely detail-oriented and reliable with deadlines
Comfortable doing high-volume work
Strong written communication with customers
Very comfortable in spreadsheets, handling structured data, and navigating financial systems
Strong fit backgrounds
Filing/compliance services (TaxJar, Avalara, accounting firms, compliance providers)
High-throughput operations roles involving accuracy and deadlines
